The Department of Defense will lead two of the new Institutes, focused on “Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation” and “Lightweight and Modern Metals Manufacturing,” and the Department of Energy will be leading one new institute on “Next Generation Power Electronics Manufacturing.” (more) |
15 September 2012Bill to Boost American Manufacturing Passes House on Strong Bipartisan VoteLegislation sponsored by Reps. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to require the development of a national strategy to revitalize American manufacturing and create jobs was approved today by the House of Representatives. The American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act, H.R. 5865, passed with an overwhelming vote, 339-77. The House’s approval sets up the opportunity for Senate consideration prior to the year’s end. 16 August 2012National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining Selected to Lead Pilot Innovation Institute on Additive ManufacturingThe Obama Administration has announced the launch of a new public-private institute for manufacturing innovation as part of its ongoing efforts to help revitalize American manufacturing and encourage companies to invest in the United States. This new partnership, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), was selected through a competitive process. The winning consortium is led by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining and includes manufacturing firms, universities, community colleges, and non-profit organizations from the Ohio-Pennsylvania-West Virginia ‘Tech Belt. 09 April 2012Administration Announces Pilot Institute for Manufacturing InnovationThe Obama Administration has identified additive manufacturing as the technology focus for the Pilot Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IMI). The Pilot Institute to serve as a proof-of-concept for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation - a $1 billion project proposed in the FY2013 budget to establish 15 collaborative institutes, each with a different technology focus, that will bridge the gap between basic research and product development; provide shared assets to help companies (particularly small manufacturers) access cutting-edge capabilities and equipment; and create an unparalleled environment for education and training in advanced manufacturing skills.
