The Lighter Side of Economics
Dr. Gene Stanaland has often been referred to as the Will Rogers of Economics. He taught at the University of Auburn in Alabama for more than 20 years. In his presentations, Dr. Stanaland provides a simplified view of what are often complex economic issues and does so with a wit that is endearing.

Dr. Stanaland will kick off the conference by sharing in his stylistic fashion the meaning behind some of the economic events and issues which have appeared in recent headlines. His presentation will set the stage for the other economists on the agenda like Erik Britton.
Dr. Gene Stanaland, President, GSE, Inc.
Dr. Gene Stanaland, President, GSE, Inc. A Unique Outlook: There’s no one quite like Dr. Gene Stanaland. Possessing a unique ability to analyze current economic conditions and relate their impact on individuals and businesses in an understandable and entertaining way, Stanaland leaves audiences entertained and amused, but also informed about the economic realities of the day.

The UNDismal Science: Economics is commonly referred to as “the dismal science,” but in a gifted entertainer like Stanaland’s hands, economics and economic issues become the Undismal science.

Credentialed and Respected: Despite what may appear to be an “unserious” attitude about economics, Dr. Stanaland has studied it seriously: He was a member of Auburn University's economics department for 20 years during which he headed the department for eight. Dr. Stanaland is now president of an economic consulting firm and serves on the board of directors of several institutions. Dr. Stanaland has served in a variety of distinguished corporate, academic and government positions. For twenty years, he was the member of the Economics Department at Auburn University in Alabama, and he was the head of the department for the last eight of those years. After serving as the Chairman of the Board, for Computer Maintenance Professionals, he resigned to become the head of GSE, Inc. a nationally recognized economics and management consulting firm. In addition, he has far reaching business interests and serves on the board of directors of prominent banks and corporations.

Manufacturing Competitiveness - Revealing the Cost Advantages
Mr. Leonard is the author of the widely cited “How Structural Costs Imposed on U.S. Manufacturers Harm Workers and Threaten Competitiveness.” The paper notes that U.S. manufacturers produce their products at about a 30% disadvantage to their foreign competition and the disadvantage offers a wonderful opportunity. Why? This disadvantage is the result of institutional, regulatory, and tax issues that our government could eliminate if they had the political will.

Mr. Leonard’s work has been instrumental in getting elected officials to see that making America stronger economically, isn’t all about working harder, protecting domestic markets, or instituting dumping cases. The audience will learn which structural cost pressures are most damaging to manufacturing competitiveness, and what needs to be done to rein them in.
Jeremy A. Leonard, Economic Consultant, Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI Inc.
Dr. James D. Hlavacek, Chairman and CEO, The Corporate Development Institute, Inc. Jeremy A. Leonard has been Economic Consultant for the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI Inc., a business research organization located in Arlington, Virginia, since 1997. How to Do Business with the Japanese in North America
A group of AMT members were in Japan in the spring of 2007 to meet with parent companies of leading first and second tier Japanese transplant companies in North America. The purpose of the trip was to find out what it would take to create a strong business relationship with these key customers and increase sales to their plants throughout North America, as well as in Japan. The results of this trip were extremely positive. The panel will discuss the lessons learned and provide further insights about the business practices of Japanese companies worldwide.

Using Market Data to Understand Business Cycles
Patrick W. McGibbon has worked in the manufacturing technology sector for 27 years and has an excellent understanding of the information with which AMT members make their strategic decisions. This presentation includes several case studies of how AMT members utilize the vast amounts of data that are available to them today.

Not every player in this industry needs every number. Just like reading the newspaper, there are sections that just don’t have to be read but once in a rare while. Pat will try to help you understand how to decide which numbers you need to keep an eye on, what reports you should scan or read, and how AMT can help you squeeze the most out of the information available to you.

Patrick W. McGibbon,
Vice President - Strategic Information & Research, AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology Patrick W. McGibbon oversees the production of benchmarking surveys for manufacturing technology and the development and maintenance of AMT members’ market intelligence database. Pat leads a team of AMT economists and analysts in providing analysis of the global manufacturing technology markets and producing the estimates of market activity in discrete product markets.

Mr. McGibbon joined AMT in this role in 1992 after working at the U.S. Department of Commerce for 5 years. There he served as an industry analyst providing insights, trade agreements, trade shows, and special trade promotion programs such as the U.S.-Japan Cooperation Program (US-JCP). The US-JCP was a market access program introduced to identify and overcome non-tariff barriers to U.S. exports to Japan. Pat mentored three of the 25 companies in the program which proved to be highly successful in providing these 25 companies access to the Japanese market and identifying obstacles for the U.S. and Japanese governments to resolve.

He was the Assistant Director of the National Machine Tool Builders’ Association (NTMBA) Statistical Department prior to joining the Commerce Department. AMT was known as NMTBA until 1988. He has degrees in economics and history from William & Mary and attended Virginia Tech’s graduate program for Economics. Pat currently serves on the Industry Trade Advisory Committee on Automotive and Capital Goods issues (ITAC 2) as an advisor on international trade issues.

A Look at the Offroad and Mining Industry
Mr. Mahan’s experience at Lovejoy, serving in many capacities including marketing and strategic planning, positions him well to talk about the direction of the mining industry, Lovejoy’s customers, and how the manufacturing needs of his customers and his industry are likely to change.

The rapid growth in demand for power fuels like coal and raw materials like copper, caused by countries like China and India, have the mining industry playing a little bit of catch up. The industry is aggressively exploring for new deposits and addressing the challenges of building and placing the equipment in the correct location. New environments and greater depths are forcing Lovejoy’s customers to make changes in their equipment – a challenge that falls onto suppliers like Lovejoy.

Mr. Mahan will present his perspective on these changes and challenges in his industry. He will translate the impact his vision will have on your company as it seeks to serve Lovejoy and the mining industry.

New Directions and Opportunities in Central Europe and Russia
As the center of gravity in Europe continues to move East, new investment and opportunities are more and more evident for AMT members. Automotive investment in particular is increasing as greenfield sites for OEMs and industrial zones for suppliers grow in number. This transition is well underway in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but a huge potential lies in Russia with a population of nearly 150 million and living standards projected to improve considerably over the next ten years. Hubert Sawicki and Malcolm Mason will elaborate on the opportunities these regions present and how AMT can help you take advantage of them.
