Professor Jun Ni is the founding Dean of the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute located in Shanghai, China. He serves as a Special Counselor to the President at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also serves as the director of the S. M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center and the co-director of a National Science Foundation-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems at the University of Michigan. From 2003 through 2006, he served as the deputy director of a National Science Foundation- sponsored Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems at the University of Michigan. He also held the position of the director of another National Science Foundation-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Dimensional Measurement and Control in Manufacturing (1993-1998).
 
Professor Ni has received many honors and awards, the most recent award being the 2010 Magnolia Gold Medal from Shanghai Municipal Government.
