Volker Hermann Derflinger attended the University of Leoben in Austria, and in 1994 he received his master’s degree in Material Science.

Mr. Derflinger joined Oerlikon Balzers Ltd. in Liechtenstein in 1995 as head of the analytical department. From 1997 until 2006, he worked in R&D as a project manager for product development in the field of hard coatings for cutting tool applications.  In 2006, he moved to Elgin, Ill., to install an Application Support Center for the Americas. There his focus was on the development of dedicated customer-tailored products and technical support of their sales and production facilities.  At the end of 2007, he moved back to the Oerlikon Balzers headquarter in Liechtenstein to provide technical support for their OEM customers and sales & production centers for their application support centers worldwide.

Since 2004, Mr. Derflinger has given lectures on coating technology and coating development on the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.
