AMT launches new laser market data survey

June 20, 2007 – AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology has invested $100,000 in rebuilding the industry’s laser market data survey. The new Web-based benchmarking survey tracks actual order data from North American manufacturers and suppliers of industrial lasers including:
  • complete industrial laser machines (workstations and laser source),

  • beam delivery only (workstations), and

  • source only.
Data is collected at a transaction level, which enables multi-dimensional reporting across destination, application, configuration, and end user industry. This allows survey participants to analyze the market by different criteria. Not only are they able to identify how many Diode Pumped Nd:YAG or Fiber lasers, 501 to 1000 watts, used for 3D cutting, were sold into the aerospace industry, in the Midwest, for example, but they can find out what the actual dollar value was.

“The timeliness of data and flexibility of the Web-based system are unmatched,” said John B. Byrd III, AMT President. “Nowhere else are companies able to identify within 45 days of the close of the month the level of detail pertaining to sales of their specific laser products.”

First quarter 2007 orders of industrial laser equipment and systems are reported at $123.3 million. Orders to North America configured as laser source only, laser source and workstation, and workstation only sold by the 31 companies reporting in the first quarter, totaled $91.2 million, while exports amounted to approximately $32.1 million.

The report shows 2D cutting applications as the largest source of industrial laser activity in first quarter 2007, accounting for 67.7 percent of all orders. In addition, 78.4 percent of industrial laser orders placed during the first quarter 2007 were of the CO2 variety and 84.3 percent of total orders were configured as a laser system (laser source and workstation).

These data are based on the actual data reported by companies participating in the Laser Market Data Survey. Participation is free, but detailed data is available only to those who actively contribute data. You do not need to be a member of AMT to participate in this statistical program.

The Laser Systems Product Group comprises AMT member companies that produce laser systems and industrial laser sources. The LSPG operates as a forum for the industrial laser systems supplier community, acting cooperatively to increase the rate of growth of industrial laser products and systems in North America. While LSPG members must be members of AMT, any North American company building or supplying industrial laser equipment may participate in AMT’s Laser Market Data Survey. Companies that meet the eligibility requirements and would like to participate in the statistical program should register at www.AMTlasersurvey.com or contact Russ Waddell, Industry Economist, at rwaddell@AMTonline.org or 703-827-5258.
