August 14, 2007 - Scott Smith, Ph.D. of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been awarded the 2006 Charles F. Carter, Jr. Advancing Manufacturing award. Dr. Smith, who is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was selected to receive this award for his work to better manufacturing, especially in the areas of machine tool structural dynamics and the chip forming process, as well as his accomplishments as a dedicated educator.
The honor was given by the Technology Issues Committee of AMT-The Association For Manufacturing Technology and is named in honor of Charles F. Carter, Jr., a retired Vice President of the association. A plaque recognizing his accomplishments was presented to Dr. Smith at this year’s NCMS/AMT Manufacturing Technology Forum in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Smith’s work to achieve a science-based understanding of the chip forming process has helped metal cutting manufacturers. And his world renowned work in machine tool structural dynamics has led directly to the application of the high-speed machining and feasibility of production of monolithic airframe structures.
As a dedicated educator and mentor to his students, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, Dr. Smith has been able to attract the best and brightest students to the manufacturing discipline.
The Charles F. Carter, Jr. Advancing Manufacturing award is presented annually to an active faculty member teaching at an accredited U.S. university, who is recognized by AMT as contributing to the advancement of the industry by providing enabling research that has been put into practice, and who is most respected in providing highly qualified students.
AMT-The Association For Manufacturing Technology (founded in 1902 as the National Machine Tool Builders’ Association) supports and promotes the U.S. machine tool industry. The association provides U.S. builders of manufacturing systems with the latest information on technical developments, trade and marketing opportunities, and economic issues. It also gathers and disseminates information about world markets, promotes its members’ products in those markets, and acts as a representative on manufacturing technology matters to governments and trade organizations throughout the world.
AMT also owns and operates the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), held every even-numbered year in Chicago. IMTS 2008, to be held at McCormick Place, September 8-13, 2008, will be the first IMTS to be held on a new, six-day schedule. It is among the largest industrial expositions in the world and the largest of its type in the Americas. This giant trade show attracts nearly 100,000 buyers and sellers from over 100 countries. More than 1,200 exhibiting companies participate in this extravaganza of the finest manufacturing equipment and related technology in the world.
