Steven Morrison joins AMT as Vice President - Strategic Communications
Steven Morrison has joined AMT as Vice President-Strategic Communications. He has nearly 30 years of varied communications experience in newspapers, public relations, and political campaigns. He will replace Robert W. Gardner who is retiring as Vice President - Public Relations after more than 16 years at AMT.
“We are delighted that Steve is joining the AMT family,” said John B. Byrd III, AMT President. “His extensive background and experience in communications will be invaluable as AMT launches a major initiative to engage our membership.”
At AMT, Morrison will head the department responsible for communications with members, including all printed publications and the AMT web site. Media relations, public relations activities, speechwriting, and other communication initiatives are also among the department’s responsibilities. In addition, the Association’s membership functions will report to him.
Morrison began his career with news organizations in New England and then served as spokesman for several political campaigns. He was Deputy Press Secretary for Senator Gary Hart’s Presidential campaign in 1983 and 1984. He has served on the government relations staff of an association and managed financial media relations for more than 25 public technology companies. He was a Special Projects Manager for the San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority and later founded his own public relations firm.
Morrison graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in Political Journalism. He and his wife, Rita, have a teen-age daughter and live in the Washington, D.C., area.
AMT (founded in 1902 as the National Machine Tool Builders’ Association) supports and promotes the U.S. machine tool industry. The association provides U.S. builders of manufacturing systems with the latest information on technical developments, trade and marketing opportunities, and economic issues. It also gathers and disseminates information about world markets, promotes its members’ products in those markets, and acts as a representative on manufacturing technology matters to governments and trade organizations throughout the world.
