This effort will initially focus on large equipment and machines addressing inherent uncertainties that are involved with accuracies at the tool-material interface. Not only will these uncertainties be addressed and understood, but feedback will allow the machine to make adjustments dynamically. This Technology Initiative has involvement from academia, industry OEMs, Defense Prime Contractors, the federal Government and other AMT member companies.
Potential technologies under consideration include lasers, ultrasonics, solid-state accelerometers, and possible use of GPS. This effort is in its very early stages with no funding yet received, but decisions are pending.
Status: Funding is being sought along several facets with an initial concentration toward seeking federal government sponsored funding. Academia is providing support-in-kind. OEM support is seeking parallel funding through other sources.
Any AMT member wishing to participate or assist is encouraged. For more information, contact Jeff Bond, Grant and Proposals Director, at 703-827-5293 (jbond@AMTonline.org).
