June 26, 2007 -- US automotive company Delphi plans to move production of plastic car parts from plants in Brazil and elsewhere in Europe to its base in Hungary, business daily Napi Gazdasag reported on Monday. At the same time, Delphi plans to invest almost HUF 1bn at the Hungarian unit. Delphi will move several different production programmes, including molding technologies and the housing for electronic centres, to its plant in Szombathely, near Hungary's border with Austria, Delphi Hungary spokesman Zoltan Jambor told Napi Gazdasag. The production will be moved from a plant in Brazil and three in Europe. Delphi picked Szombathely for the relocation because of the local skilled labour, Mr Jambor said.
Delphi will rent a facility from Szombathely-based plastics company Moldin, and it will start construction of a production facility at a greenfield site this year, Mr Jambor said. The 3,000-square-metre plant is expected to start operating by the start of next year, when Delphi plans to move its entire Packard division to Hungary. The expansion will require Delphi Hungary to hire 100 more people, Mr Jambor said. Currently the plant employs 250 staff. In 2006, Delphi moved production of bundled cable from Szombathely to Slovakia.
