August 3, 2007 -- Komatsu Ltd. said Friday it is considering building a plant in Russia to make excavators, as Russia's economic growth continues to boost demand for construction equipment. If the Russian economy continues to grow at its current pace, the construction equipment market there will likely be large enough around 2010 or 2011 for Komatsu to benefit from local production, a company spokesman said. The world's second-largest construction equipment manufacturer after Caterpillar Inc. will need to make a decision on the plant in the near future if it wants to start operating it around 2010, he said. Komatsu expects annual demand for construction and mining equipment in the Commonwealth of Independent States of below 10,000 units in 2006 to double by around 2009.
