October 16, 2007 -- ThyssenKrupp Steel USA will invest $3.7 billion on a new hot strip mill and cold rolling carbon and stainless steel complex in Calvert, Alabama. Plantmaker SMS Demag AG was awarded the contract to supply the new facilities. Installation will begin at the start of 2009 and production is scheduled to start in 2010, ThyssenKrupp said. "The hot strip mill and cold rolling complex are two of the most critical components for our operations," Bob Soulliere, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, said in the statement.
The hot strip mill will have a capacity of 5.4 million tpy and will serve ThyssenKrupp’s carbon steel and stainless steel operations. It will process slab from ThyssenKrupp’s new steel plant at Sepetiba Bay in Brazil and stainless slab from ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA, also in Alabama.
The cold rolling complex will produced 2.5 million tpy of cold rolled coil. It will be linked to a picking line, tandem mill and a separate picking unit and skin pass mill.
