Nippon Mining to Set Up Scrap Metal Collection Plant in Taiwan

January 15, 2008 -- Nippon Mining & Metals Co. plans to spend nearly 900 million yen (US$8.33 million) in Taiwan to build a facility to collect scrap metal and other waste in order to bolster recycling of gold, copper and other metals.

This facility is scheduled to begin operating this year in an industrial park near the city of Taichung. It is expected to collect an annual 15,000 tons of scrap metal, scissel, and other raw materials for recycling from electronics parts makers and others.

The Nippon Mining Holdings Inc. (TSE:5016) unit will ship the collected materials to a refinery in Oita after crushing them at the Taiwanese plant. The refinery, operated by a group firm, will make bullion out of the recovered metal.
