April 9, 2008 -- Nissan North America has announced that it will be entering the commercial vehicle market in North America, offering three vehicles designed specifically for the local market. The company's Canton (Mississippi) facility, will receive a $118 million expansion to handle the additional volume of building the vehicles. The new products will comprise a line of light buses, taxis, vans, and delivery trucks. All would be considered Class 1 through 5 commercial vehicles, be under 8 tons GVW, and would feature both diesel or optional gasoline engines. American diesel engine maker Cummins is to supply diesel engines for the commercial vehicles, and a version of one may make its way into the Titan full-size pick-up, also built at Canton. Transmissions will be supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. To make room for the addition of the new vehicles, two models currently produced in Canton will be shipped out. Production of the Quest minivan and the QX56 luxury sports-utility vehicle will be shipped to a plant in Japan.
