Toyota to Make Cheapest Model at New India Plant

April 15, 2008 -- The new subcompact to be produced at Toyota Motor Corp.'s second assembly plant in India will carry the lowest price tag in the automaker's family of vehicles. Toyota has aimed to set the new vehicle's price at around ¥800,000.

To be built on the premises of Toyota's existing facility in Bangalore, the new plant will require an initial investment of ¥35 billion yen and have an annual capacity of 100,000 units at first. Toyota will bring it onstream at "the earliest possible time" in 2010, according to officials. The plant will first manufacture Corollas, then start making the 1-liter class entry-level family car.
