May 1, 2008 – North Carolina is no longer in the running to land a major Volkswagen assembly plant, based on statements recently released by the German automaker's U.S. executives. Volkswagen representatives said last week the company has narrowed its list of states competing for a potential U.S. production facility to Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee. This comes nearly three months after rumors began circulating that VW was considering a 1,668-acre plot of land off Interstate 95, eight miles north of Rocky Mount, for its future U.S. plant location. The German automaker said it still was evaluating whether to build a new plant in the United States and would make a final decision this summer.
