VW Considering Capacity Expansion at Russian Production Facility Global Insight, August 27, 2008 Volkswagen (VW) is currently considering expanding its production at its recently opened Russian production facility in Kaluga in order to keep pace with rising demand in the domestic Russian marketplace. Speaking on the eve of the Moscow Motor Show, VW board member Detlef Wittig said, "We have to consider expanding our production site in Kaluga." The company is looking for a large increase in its sales in the Russian market to 145,000 units in 2008, in comparison to the 81,000 units that the company sold in 2007. The Kaluga plant, which is still partially under construction, will supply around 66,000 units of this sales total with the rest of the vehicles being imported from Germany and other production locations. However, with VW sales reaching potentially 200,000 units per annum (upa) in Russia by 2009 or 2010 according to Wittig, the company is examining the possibility of raising the capacity of the Kaluga plant from the current figure of 150,000 units
