Getting to Know AMT - July 2009

A look at what's happening with AMT staff

Marketing Communications Manager Monica Haley was recently named Fairfax County (Va.) Volunteer EMS Provider of the Year. Haley joined the Vienna (Va.) Volunteer Fire Department in 2006 as an administrative member, and was certified as an EMT the following year. Currently, she is an EMT and an ambulance driver and is working toward becoming an officer. She volunteers approximately 1,100 hours per year and goes on runs with the Vienna, Great Falls, Clifton and Herndon departments.

“The patient interaction is one of the best aspects,” Haley said. “Citizens call 911 and I get to help them during their worst moment. It is completely different from being in an office setting. The interactions and challenges I face at the fire department help me grow professionally and personally.”

Industry Analyst Ian Stringer and wife Decia welcomed a daughter, Emma Claire Stringer, on June 1. Emma, the couple’s first child, weighed 5 lbs., 11 oz., and was 20 inches long.

President Doug Woods completed a Rim to Rim to Rim run at the Grand Canyon over the Memorial Day weekend. The run was about 50 miles long, which Woods and two teammates completed in 20 hours. They began at the south rim, ran to the north rim, then returned to the south rim again. Of course, those 50 miles included climbing up the sides of the canyon — twice — as well as some perilously narrow pathways.

While the National Park Service doesn’t sanction any events around such a run, Woods says it’s a popular undertaking for many adventure athletes. “It’s like a mini Mt. Everest,” Woods said. “You do it just because you can.”

SIR Project Manager Julie Germain
recently became a certified Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute. Certification as a PMP requires 4,500 hours of documented project management experience, as well as a passing score on a certification exam. In addition to overseeing projects for AMT, Germain has also led projects during her time as a missionary overseas and also in New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina. For certification, her work also was put through a panel review, which was overseen by a team of project management experts.
