  • 600 Group Success as Tool Sales Go Up
    June 29, 2007 -- An engineering group has seen global sales rise by more than a tenth, with the most significant increases coming from the UK. The 600 Group, whose UK machine tools business is based at its 600 Centre in Shepshed, saw sales rise 11 per cent to £79 million in the year to the end of March. The workforce in Shepshed has increased to about 50, up from about 30 a year ago.

  • BAE Systems Wins $212.4 Million Armored Vehicle Pact to Build 441 MRAPs
    June 29, 2007 -- The U.S. Navy on Thursday awarded a $212.4 million (euro157.7 million) contract to a unit of BAE Systems Inc. to build 441 armored vehicles for American soldiers in Iraq. The award may help ease concerns about BAE's ability to secure U.S. government contracts in light of a Justice Department investigation. BAE said Tuesday that Justice is looking into allegations -- denied by company officials -- that it funneled money to a Saudi prince to help win an $86 billion weapons deal with the British government.

  • Onex Shifts to Automatics; Buys GM's Allison Transmission
    June 29, 2007 -- Just three days after it pulled out of the bidding for Bell Canada Inc., Toronto buyout firm Onex Corp. has announced a deal to buy one of the world's biggest makers of automatic transmissions -- used in vehicles from motorhomes to army tanks. Onex and partner The Carlyle Group split evenly an equity investment of about US$1.5-billion to buy General Motors Corp.' s Allison Transmission for a total price of US$5.56-billion. The partners are expected to use debt to finance the rest.

  • Mitsubishi Studies New Factory to Gain Market
    June 28, 2007 -- Japanese automaker Mitsubishi will have to build a new factory in Brazil if it wants to increase its market share, primarily in the midsized sedan segment, one of the most lucrative product bands for automakers and currently one of the fastest growing. According to Mitsubishi do Brasil president Paulo Ferraz, the multinational "is prospecting" an investment in the market, "but for the time being nothing has been concluded."

  • Hampson Sells to Lattimer in £3.96 Million Deal
    June 28, 2007 -- Hampson Industries said it has completed the sale of its precision industrial division to Lattimer Holdings for £3.96 million. The international aerospace and precision engineering group's precision industrial division takes in two units, one each in the UK and US, trading under the Lattimer name. Lattimer will employ 50 people at its site in Southport, Merseyside, and 30 at its location in New Jersey following the management buy-in backed by Merseyside Special Investment Fund.

  • Swedish Industrial Supplier B&B Tools AB Acquires Industrial Reseller in Halmstad
    June 28, 2007 -- Swedish industrial supplier B&B Tools AB (formerly Bergman & Beving) said on Thursday (28 June) that it has concluded an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares outstanding in Halmstad Svets & Verktyg AB (HSV). HSV is one of the leading resellers of products and services for cutting tools, welding and industrial consumables to industry in Halmstad and its surroundings.

  • Federal-Mogul Expects Profits After Bankruptcy
    June 27, 2007 -- Federal-Mogul Corp., an auto-parts maker seeking to resolve billions of dollars in asbestos claims, will be profitable after emerging from U.S. bankruptcy, the company's chief executive officer told Bloomberg News today. Federal-Mogul in the first quarter posted net income of $4.5 million, after a $68.4 million net loss a year earlier, Bloomberg reported.

  • Italy Machine Tools Output Up 15.9 Percent Year/Year
    June 27, 2007 -- Italy's machine tools, robots and automation output increased by 15.9 pct year-on-year in 2006, according to estimates of Italian association of machine tools and robots manufacturers UCIMU. The production value amounted to 4.9 bln euro ($6.58 bln), which is a record-high.

  • Delphi to Move Plastic Parts Production from Plants in Brazil and Europe to Hungary
    June 26, 2007 -- US automotive company Delphi plans to move production of plastic car parts from plants in Brazil and elsewhere in Europe to its base in Hungary, business daily Napi Gazdasag reported on Monday. At the same time, Delphi plans to invest almost HUF 1bn at the Hungarian unit.

  • Tatas' NOC Adds Drive to DaimlerChrysler
    June 26, 2007 -- India's largest truck and bus maker Tata Motors has given a no objection certificate to the world's largest commercial vehicle (CV) player DaimlerChrysler to manufacture CVs in India. This would allow the German company to roll out Mercedes-Benz branded CVs in India. This would also mean intense competition at the top end of the CV and luxury bus market in the country.

  • Japan's Mori Scraps Plans for New Thai Machine Tool Plant
    June 25, 2007 -- Mori Seiki Co. announced Friday that it is canceling construction of a new machine tool plant that had been planned for Thailand, opting instead to expand operations at home. The firm is canceling Thai production plans for advanced machine tools costing around 10 million yen (US$80,680) that are used in processing metal parts for automobiles and general manufacturing equipment. It had been gearing up to begin production in Thailand next April because strong sales are expected in Japan and other Asian markets, primarily Thailand itself.

  • Pratt & Whitney to Supply PW4000 Engines to Air Caraibes
    June 25, 2007 -- Manufacturer and designer of aircraft engines Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of United Technologies Corp, announced on Friday that Air Caraibes, an airline serving the French Caribbean, Guadeloup and Martinique, has selected the company's PW4000-100 engines to power two new A330-300 aircraft. The deal is valued over $75 million, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2008.

    June 20, 2007 -- Japanese car and electronic parts maker Pacific Industrial Co will invest between 300 mln Japanese yen ($2.4 mln/1.8 mln euro) and 400 mln yen ($3.2 mln/2.4 mln euro) in expanding by 900 sq m to 3,400 sq m its Yoro plant in Gifu prefecture.

  • Umeco Buys US Lincoln
    June 15, 2007 -- Leamington Spa-based aerospace group Umeco is paying an initial £30.2 million to buy US firm JD Lincoln. Umeco said the move would mean a "significant expansion of its composite materials business". The deal could cost the company up to another £7.6 million based on Lincoln's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in the twelve months after completion.

    June 15, 2007 -- Manufacturer of light and heavy commercial vehicles BMC plans to team up with Cummins for diesel engines production in Turkey. Deputy chairman of BMC, Mehmet Demirpence says that the two companies has reached an agreement over the joint production however investment details have not been discussed yet.

  • ITW Reports 15 Percent Growth in Operating Revenues
    June 15, 2007 -- Illinois Tool Works Inc. today reported an operating revenue increase of 15 percent for the three months ended May 31, 2007. Total revenue growth was in line with company expectations. Operating revenues for the three month period consisted of a 10 percent increase from acquisitions net of divestitures, 1 percent growth from base revenues and a 4 percent contribution from translation.

  • Japan's Fanuc Plans New Factory for Robot Devices
    June 14, 2007 -- Japanese machinery maker Fanuc Ltd. plans to build a new factory that will almost double its capacity to make devices used to control machine tools and industrial robots, the company said Thursday. The new plant, scheduled for a 2008 start date, will be near Fanuc's headquarters in Yamanashi prefecture, central Japan, a Fanuc spokesman said. He declined comment on the development cost of the plant. Cash on hand will be used to finance the factory, he said.

    June 13, 2007 -- According to a Dow Jones Newswire report, Collins & Aikman has initiated actions to sell its automotive exterior plastics components business to Flex-N-Gate. U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval will be necessary for the US$10.4-million deal to proceed.

  • Bombardier, Embraer Deny Airbus Deal
    June 12, 2007 -- Bombardier Inc. and Embraer SA have both dismissed reports they might individually be contemplating joining European giant Airbus SAS in a partnership to make commercial jets in the 100-to-120-seat range. “That's just speculation,” Bombardier Aerospace spokesman Marc Duchesne said yesterday of a report in the Financial Times Deutschland that Airbus – a subsidiary of European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (EADS) – is mulling a partnership with an existing or new manufacturer to develop a jet.

  • China's Medical Device Market to Be Valued at ¥12 Million in 2010
    June 12, 2007 -- The capacity of China's medical device market is predicted to top ¥12 million in 2010. At a recent forum on the development of the medical device industry, experts say the sales of China's medical industry only contributes 2% to the global sales, far from meeting the demand of China's sanitary and healthy causes. More than 90% of China's medical devices are low- and medium-end ordinary products. Instruments and equipment are mainly from imports, representing more than 45% of China's medical imports. Therefore, Chinese Government has adopted policies to develop community medical treatment, set up cooperative medical system and enhance the sanitary infrastructure construction in new countryside.

  • Toyota Eyes Capacity Expansion in Guangzhou
    June 11, 2007 -- Japanese automaker Toyota is considering building another joint plant in Guangzhou to meet strong demand in the Chinese market. The company announced on June 7 that its car sales in the Chinese mainland reached 33,000 units in May, surging 87 per cent over a year ago. In January-May, the company's car sales in the Chinese mainland market totaled 176,000 units, jumping 76 per cent year on year.

  • Samsung Plans to Build TV Plant in Russia
    June 11, 2007 --- South Korea's Samsung Electronics on Sunday announced a plan to build a $57 million plant in Russia to help meet growing demand for digital television sets. Samsung said it plans to build the factory in Kaluga, 85 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Moscow, with construction scheduled to begin next month and to be completed by October 2008.

  • Hayes Lemmerz Reports First Quarter Earnings
    June 7, 2007 -- Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc. today reported that sales for the fiscal first quarter ended April 30, 2007 were $561.0 million, up 11.4% from $503.5 million in the year earlier quarter. The sales increase came from strong international steel and aluminum wheel sales, metals cost recovery and favorable currency fluctuations, the Company said. Sales increased despite a reduction in U.S. sales volumes of $27 million, due primarily to closure of a wheel plant and lower components volume, the Company said.

    June 1, 2007 -- Magna International has announced that its subsidiary Traer Manufacturing in Iowa, US, will lay off 150 people and stop operations in July 2008, The Associated Press has reported. Workforce reductions will begin in July this year. Magna has blamed the closure on a weakening US automotive industry. The company plans to place employees in other plants where possible.
