Chinese Cars to Roll Out from Polish Factory
China's state-controlled automotive group Jiangling Motors Group Company (JMC) plans to build a factory in Poland, according to Rzeczpospolita. This will be the first Chinese car factory in Poland. The information was confirmed by Peter Bijvelds, the CEO of Landwind Motor Company, JMC's foreign unit. JMC reps will arrive in Poland in mid-September to talk to officials from the Economy Ministry and state investment agency the PAIiIZ. For now, the size of the factory and the number of workers it will employ remains a mystery. But the planned output capacity of 400,000 vehicles annually means the future facility will stand comparison with Fiat Auto Poland's plant. Fiat's investment is worth $1.2bn. "For a start, the Chinese should invest no less than EUR 1bn," estimates Jakub Farys, the head of automotive industry lobby the PZPM. JMC's most recognised model is the Landwind, resembling the Opel Frontera. This year it is to present compact car the Landwind Fashion. Aug 29, 2008

Chinese Automaker Geely Announces Plans for Mexican Plant
Chinese automaker Geely has announced plans to build a $270US-million factory in the Mexican city of Leon, according to a report on InsideLine.com. An industrial park surrounding the factory is expected to bring an additional $230US million in investment to the site, which should create over 2,000 jobs and produce 300,000 cars annually when the project is at full tilt. The first stage will see Geely invest $130US million over three years and annual production of 50,000 units; the second stage will involve an investment of $140US million over two years, raising annual capacity to 120,000 units. After 2013, a third stage will take capacity to 300,000 units for an undisclosed sum. Geely reportedly will use the plant to enter the Mexican and South American markets, and possibly as a springboard for U.S. sales as well. No timeframe has been given as to when vehicles should begin rolling off the assembly lines, or indeed when construction will begin on the complex. Aug 27, 2008

VW Considering Capacity Expansion at Russian Production Facility
Volkswagen (VW) is currently considering expanding its production at its recently opened Russian production facility in Kaluga in order to keep pace with rising demand in the domestic Russian marketplace. Speaking on the eve of the Moscow Motor Show, VW board member Detlef Wittig said, "We have to consider expanding our production site in Kaluga." The company is looking for a large increase in its sales in the Russian market to 145,000 units in 2008, in comparison to the 81,000 units that the company sold in 2007. The Kaluga plant, which is still partially under construction, will supply around 66,000 units of this sales total with the rest of the vehicles being imported from Germany and other production locations. However, with VW sales reaching potentially 200,000 units per annum (upa) in Russia by 2009 or 2010 according to Wittig, the company is examining the possibility of raising the capacity of the Kaluga plant from the current figure of 150,000 units.
