Daimler Launches Luxury Buses in India; Could Invest in Engine, Transmission Plant
Germany's Daimler AG, which owns Mercedes-Benz, has launched an inter-city luxury bus in India that will compete with Swedish rival Volvo's offerings in the fast-growing market, according to theBusiness Standard. The report notes that the company is also considering the establishment of an Indian manufacturing plant to build engines and gearboxes, into which it could invest between 2,500 crore rupees ($560US million) and 3,000 crore rupees. "We are yet to figure out when the entire bus building operation, including the development of engine and gearboxes, will happen in India. However, we are looking at a possibility to set up a manufacturing unit over the next three to five years", Harald Landmann, who is in charge of Mercedes-Benz Bus division, was reported as saying. GM Considering India as Global Small-Car Hub
General Motors (GM) is said to be looking at making its Indian operations a hub for small-car production, reports Dow Jones Newswires. The president and managing director of local unit General Motors India, Karl Slym, told the news service at the opening of the new Talegaon facility that, "Eventually, we can scale the capacity to 300,000 units a year at this facility depending on market demand", adding, "We are considering this [plant] as an export hub for small cars." GM to Build Next-Generation Astra in Russia
General Motors (GM) has said that it intends to manufacture the Opel Astra at its new Russian production facility in St Petersburg, according to anAutomotive Newsreport. The head of GM's Russian operations, Chris Gubbey, said, "I see Astra as giving us a very strong boost. It is a very strong model." Gubbey would not put a timescale on the beginning of Astra production in Russia, although he expressed his hope that GM would achieve similar success with the model to that Ford has enjoyed with the Focus, which has been manufactured at Ford's plant in St Petersburg since 2005.
