EU Tariffs Sought on Chinese Steel Imports
October 29, 2007 -- European steel producers today will ask European Union trade officials to apply punitive tariffs on Chinese steel imports, according to people familiar with the matter. It would take at least 10 months for the EU to apply tariffs, but trade officials in Brussels appear to be sympathetic. New Hydraulic Press Line with Higher Speeds, Precise Control
October 29, 2007 -- When the Miele & Cie. KG appliance company expanded its offering of automatic washers and dryers, they decided to build a new hydraulic press line to make the rear metal panels. The press line needed hydraulic control capable of producing extremely fast press strokes to handle the transfer of each metal sheet to the next stage of the press. Auto Castings Maker Plans More Plants
October 26, 2007 -- Georg Fischer, Europe's largest maker of automotive iron castings, will invest 50 million Swiss francs in China next year to set up three plants to meet the growing demand for its products here, the company said yesterday in Shanghai. The new plants will help the Switzerland-based company boost its China sales to about 550 million Swiss francs in three years from last year's 300 million, its president and chief executive officer, Kurt E. Stirnemann, told Shanghai Daily. The plants will make products sold by the company's three core businesses - automotive iron castings, piping and machine tools. The factories are scheduled to go into operation in 2009. The company already has 11 plants in the country. "China will continue to play an important role in our Asia market as it already accounts for two-thirds of our revenues in the region," Stirnemann said. Creep-Feed Grinding is a Mining Process: (So Why Not Use a Vertical Machining Center?)
October 26, 2007 -- Creep-feed grinding is an abrasive machining process, but beyond that, it doesn't resemble other forms of grinding. Nelson Beaulieu, grinding product manager with Hardinge Inc., says it makes more sense to characterize creep-feed grinding as a milling process. After all, creep-feed grinding employs a deep cut and a high metal removal rate, and it features a low feed rate in place of fast reciprocating motion. Aluminum Continues its Impressive Run in Automobiles
October 25, 2007 -- The latest study from Ducker Worldwide documents 30 years of continuous year-over-year growth of aluminum content in North American light vehicles, and projects that growth to continue through 2015. As reported in a special publication from the Aluminum Association, the study shows that in 2006, aluminum, for the first time, eclipsed iron in vehicle content worldwide. Alcoa Wins $360M Jet Fighter Parts Pact
October 19, 2007 -- Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. has been awarded a $360 million contract by the defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. to supply parts for new stealth fighter jets that will replace aging military planes. Alcoa's forged and cast products division in Cleveland will produce alloy aluminum die forgings for the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter, over the next 10 years, the company said. The U.S. plans to use the F-35 to replace older planes used by the Marines, Air Force and Navy, including F-16, F-18 and Harrier jets.
