China inaugurates homegrown regional passenger jet
December 21, 2007 -- China's first fully homegrown commercial aircraft rolled off the production line Friday, marking a potential milestone for the country's aviation program. In a nationally televised ceremony, the Xiangfeng, or "Flying Phoenix," was towed into a hangar at the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory amid flashing laser lights and rousing music. Sumitomo Metal, China Steel in JV to Make Steel Sheet in Vietnam
December 21, 2007 -- Japan's Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. (TSE:5405) announced Thursday that it will produce steel sheet in Vietnam for use in automobiles and home appliances through a joint venture with China Steel Corp. (TSX:2002), Taiwan's largest steelmaker. Slated to begin operating in 2011, the joint venture will make cold-rolled, zinc-plated and electromagnetic steel sheet. The plan is to break ground for a factory with an annual production capacity of 1.7 million tons on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City in the middle of next year, once the Vietnamese government has granted approval. EADS Names Companies for Plant Takeovers
December 20, 2007 -- The European aerospace group EADS has named three companies it hopes will take over six plants in Germany, France and Britain being divested as part of a cost-cutting drive at its Airbus unit. In a joint statement, EADS and Airbus said that they will begin exclusive negotiations with MT Aerospace, a division of Germany's OHB Technology AG for three German plants, France's Latecoere SA for two French plants, and Britain's GKN plc for part of Airbus' operations in England. India: India emerges as production hub for small cars
December 18, 2007 -- Section: Regional News - India is emerging as a production hub for Asian car manufacturers rolling out new compact models for the global market. Anjana Pasricha reports from New Delhi that the market for small, low-priced cars is on the rise worldwide. Suzuki Motor Corporation says a new compact hatchback targeted at European customers will start to roll out of a plant near New Delhi in December of next year. December 18, 2007 -- TOKYO (Nikkei)-- Makino Milling Machine Co. (6135), a leading maker of machine tools, is reorganizing the operations of its subsidiary in China. Makino China Co. is based in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. Up until now, the head office has managed all five sales offices and all three technical centers nationwide in addition to the factory in Kunshan that makes arc-discharge machining tools. Daimler wins orders for 1,052 hybrid city buses

GE's aviation unit orders 55 passenger jets
December 14, 2007 -- General Electric Co.'s aviation subsidiary has ordered 55 passenger jets from Boeing Co., the companies said Thursday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Japan's Sodick to Double Precision-Molding Capacity in China
December 12, 2007 -- Sodick Hightech Co. (TSE:6160) plans to more than double the production capacity at its precision-molding business in China during 2008. December 11, 2007 -- Aerojet, an aerospace and defence company and a business division of GenCorp (NYSE: GY), announced on Monday (10 December) that the company has been selected by The Boeing Company to provide additional forward boom ship sets for the US Air Force's F-22 Raptor programme. December 10, 2007 -- Major construction equipment manufacturers in Japan are hurrying to develop equipment compatible with new exhaust gas regulations set to take effect from 2011, aiming to be among the first to market new models that satisfy the more stringent rules. Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd. plans to spend 5 billion yen (US$44.86 million) by 2010 to expand a site on the outskirts of Kobe where engine performance and durability are tested. Bosch planning further investment in India
December 7, 2007 -- Robert Bosch, the German automobile industry supplier, is planning to invest a further 170m euros in India by 2010, in addition to a 325m-euro investment programme between 2005 and 2008. The company expects its turnover in India to grow by almost 20 per cent to 815m euros this year, while the number of staff employed by the group in India is set to rise by 10 per cent to 18,000. Until now, Bosch has been known in India mainly through its subsidiary Motor Industries Company Limited (Mico); the company now plans to rename its Indian subsidiary Bosch Limited, provided that it obtains the approval of the authorities and of outside shareholders, who control 30 per cent of the subsidiary. Kia Motors to Start Its Second Plant in China Amid Sluggish Sales

RUSSIA: Iveco begins construction of new Daily plant
December 5, 2007 -- The construction of a new Daily manufacturing facility has commenced in Russia, as part of a joint venture established in June 2007 between Iveco, a Fiat Group company, and the industrial group Samotlor-NN, one of Russia’s major bodybuilders. This joint venture has seen the formation of a company called Saveco, which is 51 per cent owned by Iveco, which will manufacture the Daily locally. In addition to the transport of goods, particular emphasis on using the company’s award-winning light commercial vehicle chassis will be placed on the production of vehicles for use in minibus and ambulance applications.
