Jump Starting Electric Car Production

Will electric cars ever get up to speed in the United States? Several moves over the past summer point toward progress in that direction. Two manufacturers have announced plans to build new production facilities in the United States, while General Motors Corp. says the Chevy Volt is on track to hit the market by 2010. If all goes as planned, thousands of jobs could be created by the recent activities, including up to 4,000 in Kentucky where Integrity Manufacturing LLC plans to build electric cars for Santa Rosa, Calif.-based ZAP, according to Kentucky's Economic Development department. Changes in the U.S. economy coupled with high fuel prices and government-provided incentives are the main drivers for much of this activity.

Johnson Controls Incorporated (JCI), an auto parts supplier, has started construction of its automotive interior components manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia. The company is investing USD15m in the project. It has completed site preparation, and construction will begin next week. The facility covers a 130,000-square-foot area on 20 acres of land. VW to roll out passenger cars from Pune plant six months ahead of schedule

Volkswagen AG (VW) (Xetra: VW), a Germany-based automaker, is rolling out passenger cars from its greenfield plant in Pune six months ahead of schedule, according to the head of the German state of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff. The company is investing USD300m over a 500 acre site at Chakan near Pune. The plant will be operational in 2009 and manufacture small cars. According to Wulff, 'We had a great experience as far as India is concerned. The new plant in Pune is coming up six months earlier than its plan.' Vladimir Avetisian, chief executive of United Automobile Technologies (OAT), has announced that OAT is negotiating to buy SOK Group's auto components business. According to Avetisian, the due diligence process may start in six weeks to two months; OAT is currently studying an investment memorandum prepared by SOK. OAT is interested in eight enterprises out of SOK Group's components business: Avtosvet, Osvar, Belzan, Schetmash, Vasinterservice, Komplekt-LTD, Rosavtoplast, and Motor-Super. Presumably, the money to buy these assets would come from investors assembled by OAT stakeholder Troika Dialog. "We have not yet determined the asset value, but should have an impression of it within the next few days," said Avetisian.

ABSTRACT Polish mining equipment producer Zabrzanskie Zaklady Mechaniczne (ZZM), part of the Kopex group, has announced that it will invest over Zl 60mn (US$ 26.25mn EUR 18.22mn) in the extension of its factory in the Katowice special economic area. The factory produces longwall shearer-loaders, and is the largest producer of these machines in the world. KARIYA, Japan, Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- DENSO Corporation announced today that it will build a new test facility at its Zenmyo Plant located in Nishio, Aichi, Japan for testing common rail systems-fuel injection systems for diesel vehicles. The new facility is set to begin operations in April 2010.

Hyundai Targets Production of 150,000 upa in Russia from 2012

Hyundai is targeting annual production of 150,000 passenger cars at its new Russian production facility, which is due to come on stream fully in 2012. According to Reuters, the company made the pledge in a statement from the company's Chairman Chung Mong-koo, who has just visited the site of the new plant which is currently under construction in St Petersburg. In the statement Chung said, "High oil prices and the financial crisis have been denting the global automobile market, but we will keep plant operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia stable and boost sales of strategic models, including Cee'd and i30." The latter model is likely to be manufactured at the new plant, along with the new B-segment i20, which has been unveiled at this week's Paris Motor Show.

Honda's CEO, Takeo Fukui, announced at the unveiling of the next generation Jazz (Fit) model in Paris, that it will manufacture the new car at its plant in Swindon, united Kingdom in order to meet growing demand for fuel efficient cars in Europe. Fukui also unveiled the new Insight hybrid-only model, saying its 1.3-litre engine would achieve similar fuel efficiency to the Civic hybrid but at a "significantly reduced price."
