Last MTConnect Technical Advisory Group meeting of 2015 held at NIST

The fourth MTConnect Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting of 2015 was held Nov. 9-10, 2015, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. The attendees discussed the enhancements that will be in the MTConnect standard version 1.4.0 release. NIST gave a presentation about the work it is doing in the robotics space, as well as the virtual side of the NIST Smart Manufacturing Systems Test Bed. It also gave the meeting attendees a tour of the NIST Fabrication Technology Shops, which is where the physical elements of the test bed are being deployed. Additionally, NIST presented the NIST Cyber-Security Framework, and Virginia Tech facilitated a cyber-physical security workshop.

The first MTConnect Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting of 2016 will be held January 20-21 at University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind. The meeting will be co-hosted by ITAMCO and University of Notre Dame. Visit to register.

Deadline for the MTC Student Challenge Ideation competition extended to March 15, 2016

The submission period for the first of two competitions under the MTConnect Student Challenge, the Ideation competition, will close on March 15, 2016. For this competition, students are asked to identify challenges in the manufacturing industry and describe potential solutions in a five-page proposal. The prizes for this competition are $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place and three $1,000 prizes for runners up.

For the second competition, the Application competition, students are asked to develop an innovative application to address one or more needs of the manufacturing industry. The prizes for this competition are $10,000 for first place, $7,500 for second place and $5,000 for third place. The submission period for this competition has been extended to July 15, 2016.

The MTConnect Student Challenge is sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Defense-wide Manufacturing Science and Technology (DMS&T) and executed by AMT-The Association For Manufacturing Technology, the U.S. Army Benét Labs, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) and the MTConnect Institute, in partnership with SME and the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA).
