For the past 20+ years, I’ve been fortunate to work for a company that believes good things happen when you put yourself in a position to network with industry peers. Attending various events every year has allowed me to grow my professional network and create lasting relationships. Typically a conversation with a new person will find a common ground, and from there you can form a new relationship and gain newfound knowledge.

Throughout the year, AMT organizes a number of events where you can learn about ways to improve your business, the economic state of our industry and, of course, network.

One very key component to networking is the physical act of showing up! Oftentimes I hear people say that they are just too busy to attend conferences or other events. Very simply, you need to make the time. Growing your knowledge base is important; however, expanding your network of industry peers is vital and works best face to face.

Now that you’ve shown up, you need to take the next step.  Talking to people you know is great, but talking to people you’ve never met before is even better! This will put some of you outside of your comfort zone. If you know other attendees, ask them to introduce you to people they know and offer to do the same for them. If not, don’t be afraid to walk up to someone new and introduce yourself. For those of you who are conference veterans, make sure to go out of your way to introduce yourself to a “first timer.” They can usually be identified by a ribbon on their badge or sometimes they have that deer in the headlights look as they walk around the event. You’ll not only make someone new feel more comfortable, you may also learn something from them.

Make sure that you are taking advantage of the events AMT offers throughout the year!  On November 10, AMT will be hosting the Distribution Regional Summit at John Force Racing in the Indianapolis area. If you are within driving distance, you should certainly check it out.  Presentation topics include sales techniques, the economy and the future of distribution. Additionally, there will be a tour of the facilities followed by a networking reception. Hope to meet you there!

Other upcoming events to consider are The MFG Meeting in March and the Distribution Summit (D17) in September.
