Shop Floor Automations, a long-time AMT member, will be in business for 20 years, as of 2018. Preparations to celebrate this milestone are in the beginning stages, but here is a look at where we have been and where we are going:
When we started in 1998, it was for the purpose of distributing the Predator Software product line to the San Diego and Los Angeles manufacturing markets here in California. Within a half year, we offered services to the entire West Coast. In 1999, we became the largest distributor of Predator and have held that #1 spot for decades running.
We found our new "home" in May of 2002 when we moved to La Mesa, which is a busy suburb just outside of San Diego (we are right around the corner from San Diego city limits). Having this new, spacious office helped us to be able to service the entire country properly.
Over the years, we acquired new software as an approved reseller, such as Scytec's DataXchange, JobPack, Bigfoot CMMS, and Ascendant Technology. We have also taken on and customized extensive hardware choices for many manufacturing solutions. Our staff grew, and we have been proud to take on employees who are constantly learning and are passionate about technology, so they can then pass that passion on to the customer via training, both in person and over the phone/remote sessions. A good number of employees have been with us for over 10 years!
We launched a new website in 2003 and we started to attend tradeshows such as IMTS, WESTEC, FABTECH, and more. We added new abilities for customers, such as a web call back feature and an online store. We also moved a couple more times in the early 2000's, but we've always found a charm about La Mesa that has kept us here ever since.
As the years went by, we were humbled to have our press releases featured in publications such as Modern Machine Shop, CNC West, MoldMaking Technology, and MFG News, just to name a few. We met incredible people who became customers and partners in this industry. We celebrated the birth of our employees' first kids and watched their families grow.
We opened an office in Michigan, as well as another office in Texas, so that we could have a more convenient reach to customers in those areas of the country. We embraced newsletters to send out to customers and let them know what is going on with our company. We have seen the newsletter list grow to the thousands!
We've also had some sad times. We have seen the manufacturing skills gap cause significant efficiency issues in this industry. In October of 2011, we suffered one of the biggest blows to our company history when our co-founder Shawn Dunne passed away after battling cancer.
But just like the CNC machines we work on, with a little help, we found out how tough we are and we keep working. We have hired more people throughout the years to create this wonderful team we have today, and we look forward to many more years of service as a manufacturing integrator.
In 2017, we are still seeing the success of a new product we released Fall of 2016 called the Wi-Fi USB Connect, which helps shop floors go wireless easily and for a low cost. We will soon have the Multi Connect available, which allows shops to connect five ways and has both machine monitoring and DNC capabilities. We also will be attending WESTEC, and will be sure to inform customers of updates, and support, to the software solutions that we provide.
Especially as the manufacturing industry grows with more jobs brought back to America, and as more incoming workers help to fill the MFG skills gap, we will be ready to help make their jobs easier. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us!
