There is enormous interest and excitement over emerging innovations in additive manufacturing. There is also a great deal of hype. A fundamental challenge in business is understanding how to separate what is real from what is hype. The objective of this discussion is to outline the state of where the additive manufacturing industry is today, where it is being applied successfully and how it can be effectively used in manufacturing. Topics will include emerging technologies such as printed electronics, high throughput systems (CI BAAM and HP multi-jet fusion), hybrid systems (DMG-Mori) and the impact these technologies can have on developing new business models (Local Motors, GE First Build).
