1. Being Nice Has a Price

Saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT may cost OpenAI tens of millions – at least in the form of extra server cycles and electricity – but CEO Sam Altman says it’s worth it. A survey found that 70% of users are polite to AI, and experts say that etiquette can improve responses. Still, it raises questions about energy use and whether politeness to AI is worth the environmental impact. Who knew that good manners could leave a carbon footprint?

2. Strange Symmetries, Stronger Metals

Quasicrystals – once thought impossible – were found in a 3D printed aluminum-zirconium alloy, boosting its strength. Discovered at NIST, these non-repeating atomic structures disrupt weak points in metal. This breakthrough could lead to stronger, lighter parts for planes and cars – and a new era of alloy design through additive manufacturing.

3. No Plan To Ban

The EU is not banning carbon fiber in new cars. Initial reports misread a proposal to improve recycling and disposal, not prohibit use. Concerns, especially from Japan, eased after clarification. While sustainability remains a focus, carbon fiber stays in the game – alongside alternatives like hemp composites and Tegris – giving automakers a wider materials playbook.
